I'm new to the forum and just ordered a 2012 F-450 KR from my dealership in California. I had a question about registration, I'm military and my home of record is in TN, I would like to register there. However the dealership told me that it had to be registered in CA. Is this correct? I previously bought a car in Virginia and had it registered in TN I thought it would be the same here? Does CA had some law that says if you buy in CA you have to register in CA? I'm very excited and can't wait for it to come in! Thanks for any information you may have.
I believe the dealer is telling you the truth, but I've been looking on the Ca DMV website for an official answer to your question and can't seem to find anything. You might try giving the DMV a call to confirm what you're being told by the dealer.

I think the dealership is feeding you a line of BS. I bought my son a new car last year after he totalled his while away at college, and the dealership had no problem doing the out of state registration, for us. You might want to check other dealerships... if they really want your business they should be willing to jump through hoops for you! It is not a matter of the Ca DMV not allowing it... they don't even know you have bought the vehicle until the dealership has submitted the change of ownership/ registration paperwork... The local Dealership did my sons car online and it took about 10 minutes.. he just had to have the VIN verified after the vehicle was in the state where his university was..... My Guess is that the sales manager doeesn't know how to do it and so they are just trying to get out of it.
I called the CA DMV and talked with a gentlemen how was in the military for a number of years, he confirmed that there is no California law preventing the dealership from registering it in a different state. He said they either didn't know how or didn't want to. I'm going to all TN DMV on Monday and see what they say about the matter. Thank you for the help.
I got my truck out-of-state too and didn't have any real issues, just dealing with the BMV when I got home. My temp tag was registered in the sate-of-sale and I also had to have their state inspection for it to be driven in their state on my way home.
You can't post this and not tell us exactly what you ordered!! We need to know color, interior package, tire size, bed length, rear axle.... all the details!
I'm sorry here are the details:
2012 F-450 KR Black 4WD 172" WB
Up-fitter Switches
5th Wheel Prep
Dual Alternators
Engine Block Heater
Splash Guards
Navigation System
Moon-roof
Rapid-heat supplemental heater
Tailgate Step
Bed-liner
6.7 PS with 4.30 gears
Black/ Chaparral KR interior
Total MSRP was 69,375
I went with the 450 over the 350 mostly for the wide track front axle. I wanted a dually since I plan on pulling a 53ft trailer with my house hold goods when I do PCS moves. If there is anything I forgot please ask.
My post was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but that sounds like a really nice truck! I'd love to see what that interior looks like, I didn't care for the tan/KR combo that was the only combo available when I was shopping, and went with a black Lariat Ultimate instead. When is the scheduled delivery date?
Thanks I'm really excited to get it. I just placed the order so I don't have a build or delivery date yet. When I get it I will be sure to post up some pictures.
