I like the larger rims myself so I say 18.

18's are nice, but not quite as many tires to choose from. I like 18's with 33" tires. But I like the variety of tire options on the 16's.

I would NOT go with a 17, the tires are more expensive for some reason. I think an 18 would be a good size, but personally I think I will stay with my 16's until i switch to 20's. I had 20's in 8x6.5 but sold them since they wouldn't fix. I want to get some 20" mt classic blacks.

i would go with the 16in rims (cheaper offroad tires in the long run) or 16.5 size (which you can buy the military take off tires for like $100 bucks ea) those sizes are 37-12.5x16.5 hummer tires..

I wouldn't ever buy a set of 16.5's, they are impossible to find anything but mud tires for, and the irony is that they are the worst tires you could get for offroad because of the bead retention design in a 16.5 wheel, it loses beads easier. Plus 16.5 in a 8x170 is an unusual combination.
16.5 is being phased out..

the way i see it...if its good enough for Uncle Sam to use on the HUMMER vehicles. its good enough for me! plus with the cost wise of surplus tires you can buy for $100 bucks a pop ..that is a helluva deal compared to $300 bucks a tire.

as far as bead retention. i highly doubt the OP will do rock crawling with his EX...i really highly doubt that. even then..if the OP was to rock crawl his rig. MB motoring is the last rim company i would be looking into for rims.

They don't use em anymore. When the hummer came out the 16.5 was the standard size on one ton trucks. That was a long time ago. And yeah the tires are cheaper, but even the tires are getting harder to find and the ones you do tend to be over 6 years old and have dry rot, definitely nothing I'd want under my 9000 lb truck for highway duty. And bead retention was not an issue on the military hummers because they used double beadlock wheels.

I don't know what his plans are but 16.5's lose their beads in any situation where they are aired down and have side force applied to them, and that is a lot more than just rock crawling.

The bottom line, though, is that the military tires are all 37's and thats as close to an all terrain tire as you can find. And to fit 37's on an x you need 6" or more of lift. And if you ever want a less aggressive tire, you are screwed. There are no street tread tires available in 16.5 anymore. And even the off road tires its fewer and fewer every year.

only reason i suggested that rim combo is that the OP has a 7 inch lift and its a good alternative to paying 2k plus for rims and tires. now if he wants to spend that much on a setup..then by all means

Buy my 22's and run 37" tires! Those rims and that tire make for an aggressive looking ride.
