Burning Smell coming from EX

My wife was out shopping a couple days ago and when she got home there was a burning smell coming from the EX. I checked the fluids (oil, tranny) and took it for a test drive and it drove fine. All the levels were fine, the guages showed nothing abnormal and it took off and stopped like normal. Anyone have any ideas? I know it will need brakes soon but it smelled more like a oil smell than overheating brakes. She had been driving it all day so I don't think it could have been oil that leaked on a manifold or something because the smell would have been gone by the time she got home. Several months ago I had the tranny and diffs serviced (tranny drained, flushed and replaced with synth fluid-the diffs drained and refilled).

Any thoughts? I might drive it this weekend to see if it does it again since it usually sits a lot.

Thanks.

Maybe tranny front seal leaking fluid on the exhaust?

Maybe it was a credit card in her purse.

if you have no leaks evident, it could have been a car she was following or just something in the air. has it done it since?

Is it possible the tranny was overfilled and that a full day of driving made it burp some fluid?

No, it has never done it before. She worked tonight and said it did not do it on the way to work or from. I plan on driving it tomarrow all day and keeping an eye on it myself. I thought all of your suggestions made a lot of sense and will check those items.
Thanks

I would at least crawl under there and see if the bottom front of the tranny is wet.
