I want to down size the tires and was thinking of going to a 285 75r 16. will I have any problems with these tires fitting my rims? what will the total hight of the tire be with this size tire?

That size measures about 30"-31" depending on the manufacture.

IMO a 10" wide rim is too wide for a 285/75. 7"-8" would be better.

I totally agree, I think you'll see the rim stick out compared to the tread
