Turbo rebuild

Currently rebuilding my turbo.

I'm concerned with the new bearings that came in the kit.

Old bearing have an O.D. of 0.628
New bearings have an O.D. of 0.617

They fit snugly on the shaft, but move up and down in the housing WAY more then the old bearings...

Anyone have any input on this?

Also, anyone have torque specs on these turbos?

Also, what compressor wheel is this? The turbo is from a 95 junkyard truck, my 94.5 has a different wheel. My wheel has the blades paired in 2's.

What rebuild kit did you purchase?

The assembly will have decent play in it until you get it filled with oil. If you want to test it turn the turbo over and fill the center section up with oil. Spin the shaft and you will be amazed how tight it gets.

That wheel is a 99.5-03 Garrett compressor wheel whereas you should have a 94-99 Borg Warner compressor wheel stock. Someone must have swapped it out.

No offense to you, but the old bearings are tighter. I'm worried about the compressor wheel hitting the housing with this amount of play.

A dial caliper shows the difference, almost .011.

For "*****s n giggles", open a new kit and measure the bronze bushings. See if they are different from my measurements.

I'm new to this, so if experienced mechanics or DYIers know better, thats fine. But my instincts tell me this is ODD.

Also, on the compressor wheel... WTF? Why would someone swap a late 99+ wheel onto a 95 turbo???

Aren't the OBS wheels better then the 99+ wheels? grrrrr

The late wheel will flow a little more air but may cause turbo surge. SD guys put the "wicked wheel" or stock OBS wheel in their turbos to eliminate surge because of the much tighter turbine housing on those trucks.

Put the whole turbo back together with the new sloppy bearings and I could get the turbine wheel to rub the housing. Not happy with that.

Tore the turbo down and put just the old bearings back in, kept the new steel thinger in there, just swapped out the brass bearings.

WAY tighter..... gonna leave it alone with the old bearings.

Having a SD wheel in it means that's someone has been into it before so could it be possible that it was rebuilt with an oversize bearing?

This could be true.

The SD wheel is more aggressive.
I've seen a few people report liking them, but it wont really gain you anything in the OBS turbo.

I hope so.

When I get the turbo off my truck to swap this one in, I'll take it apart and measure the bearings.

So where would I find these over-sized bearings?

You'd have to find a machineist and re-do everything again.
be cheaper to just buy a new bearing housing.

Hmmmmm. This is my spare turbo thats getting modified. The turbo that's on my truck works fine. So when the spare goes on, I'll still have the original that is in good shape.
