I have a 2004 F150 FX4 Screw stock with the 5.4.. well, mostly stock. 132K miles...
The only thing that has been done (thus far) is the exhaust rotted off at the muffler after the previous ****** owner put a really crappy 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust on it. I kinda like the rumble after the muffler rotted off, so I left it, and am considering just having an exhaust shop re-pipe it out the rear end of the truck without a muffler.
I was toying with a CAI -- but I don't know if it would do any good, as the stock intake is already more or less CAI when it pulls from the fender anyway.
I'm also kinda hoping to get a few MPGs if that's even possible with this thing. Love the truck -- the gas mileage is a ton better than my old '98, but driving 70 miles a day for work it tends to add up... fast.
I've been considering an Edge programmer -- but I understand that it would need custom tunes because of the exhaust not being bone stock. Do the programmers really live up to all their hype? Do they add more stress to the motor and transmissions? Any and all info you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Forget the CAI. It's mostly just engine bling by itself. If you were to go as far as to change headers, add more fuel, change the MAF to add more air, and get custom tunes to account for all of that...then a CAI would be beneficial.
The Edge would need to go to Power Hungry Performance and be converted into Gryphon to be custom tuned.
You can also look at 5 Star Tuning (site sponsor) as Mike Butler has tuned a large amount of 5.4Ls and can help you out for about $400 (that includes the device and his tunes).
I have tunes from Mike, and I like them...a lot. If you take Mike's advice and don't change any parameters yourself, then it should be pretty safe. But with anything mechanical, ***** happens eventually. Personally, I have no regret with my purchase from 5 Star. I love the way the truck runs and shifts.

I have a superchips cortex a flowmaster, a modified air intake and a trans go shift kit. Neither the engine or trans has went out yet. I am sure it does place additional stress on them both. This is just my opinion but if you want to see 400k miles leave the truck stock if you wont keep it past 150-200k feel free to play with the tuning. The custom tunes should give you better results on a modified vehicle but for me the price is too high. I got my tuner for $100 used.
