Exclamation Bleading the fuel system??

Again, i have an 86 f250. 6.9L... I have determined that she wont start cus i have not bled and the system properly. after doing injectors and lines im sure there is tons of air in the system. all i know is to blead the tire valve on the filter, but that only fills the filter correct? do i crack injector lines ? which ones? thanks!

I would crack them all open, as soon as you see a dribble of fuel at each one tighten them up.

it takes a while, i have burned up many a starter and killed a few battery chargers...this is what i have been doing when i run mine outta fuel....you guys can laugh...but it works good....take a regular bath towel....fold it 3 times.....pour gasoline on it and hold it over the intake plenum and crank.... it may start on the gas fumes if it does let it run....oh yeh....take the air cleaner off....DO NOT POUR GAS IN THE INTAKE..... pour it on a rag and let the engine suck in the fumes, wait till after the glow plugs cycle, and dont let them cycle again until you crank it a few times to get the gas outta the cylinders........ or you can do it the old fashioned way.....crank for 10 seconds rest for 5 min at a time.....of course this will prolly take you a week

It will not suck air when you stop to tighten each line as it dribbles fuel. Once fuel is up to them, a bit more cranking and the injectors will quickly self bleed.

Don't do that, and don't tell people to do that. Gasoline is dangerous and thats a good way to start a fire. Vapors from the towel could ignite from a spark under the hood somewhere. Not to mention that if the glow plugs fire, that could ignite the fumes and cause engine damage.

Rollin.IH.Coal,
Loosen the injector lines at the injectors, just loosen a bit, don't take them off. That will help the IP push fuel through the lines easier, as the air compresses a lot easier than the fuel will, and makes it harder for the injector to fire off.
Be careful when you do this that you don't go near the injectors while turning the engine off. High pressure diesel fuel can be injected directly through your skin. The correct medical procedure at that point is surgery to cut out the affected skin (possibly amputation..).
That being said, if you're standing back watching you should be fine. Its only if you have your finger like on the injector that you would need to worry.

Have a battery charger hooked up to keep your batteries juiced up. Crank for like 20 seconds and wait 2 minutes. You don't want to kill the starter. That also lets the charger top off the batteries each time.

If it starts turning over slowly, let it rest, the batteries are too low, they need to turn over pretty fast to catch.

If you fill up the fuel filter, and the fuel pump works, it shouldn't take long at all for the truck to self purge the lines and start. Are you sure there is voltage to the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid on the pump?

Lastly, once you see fuel at the injectors, tighten the lines or they won't produce the pressure to fire off the injectors. Don't tighten the lines while its running, see the warning above!

The best thing you can do for yourself is install an Electric fuel pump. You can use it to prime the system without using the starter. This pump will allow the Mechanical pump to push through it when you're operating normally:

It's also a lot cheaper than replacing a burned up starter.

PS: You won't have to touch the high pressure lines. Somewhere someone cross threaded one of the connections on "old Gray".

I've never needed an electric pump. I simply crack a single injector line, crank it over until it fires, shut it off, and tighten the line.

It sounds daunting until you have done it once. Then it's no big deal.

I'll second that. An electric pump is a costly add on just to prime a self priming system...

Maybe its just me, but I can't figure out why so many people have issues bleeding out the system. I'd guess many of them have borderline glow plug issues as well and the lack of instant fuel adds in to make a multi symptom poor start situation which equals to no start.

Once you are shut down miles from anywhere and no one around, you'll figure out why I like to do it the easy way. The pump mentioned above is only $51.99. The convenience of waiting 15 minutes to prime the system is well worth that much to me.

It's warm enough here that you don't need grid heaters or glow plugs.

My issue that caused me to learn how to bleed was a bad fuel selector that kept blowing fuel lines. I bled mine about 20 times in one day.

if you dont have an e-pump,just unscrew the fuel filter and fill it up with diesel.
plug in the block heater if you have one just to help things along.
then just crank for 15 solid seconds.stop for 2 solid minutes.crank again for a solid 15 seconds,if she doesn't fire up and run, just continue until she does with this 15 sec/2 min processes.she'll go.just keep the batteries fresh or if she's a standard just tow her down the road until she lights off to save the starter.
