I've wanted for years to put an automatic tranny in my old '63.The current motor is a 390,hooked to the original WORE OUT T-98.My question for those of you who have done this is #1-keeping the 390,and adding a C6,do you have any problems with the crossmember that the bellhousing sits on clearance wise?and whats the shortest C6 I can use length wise (mines a 4WD,so I have to allow for the transfercase/middle driveshaft). It would be great if it could be shortened up like some of the racing Powerglides.#2-how about a 351/AOD setup instead, since the truck has 3.89 gears, OD for cruising would be nice (same crossmember/interferance question here).Anybody here able to offer any advice? TIA, Al
can't help with the cross member. To the besyt of my knowledge, the 351 aod won't go to a 390. different bolt setup.
the way it was explained to me, 351 and below has one pattern, the FE's another, and the 429-460 yet another.
please let me know if thats right as i am going to swap my 400M for a 390 and was told the c-6 i have won't fit the FE motor
Lets see.... 255, 289(late 65 with 6 bolts), 302, 351W, 351C, (all V-8's) 240, 300 (I-6), all have the samp bolt pattern on the bell housing bolts. The 221, 260, and early 289 (mid year 65) had a 5 bolt bellhousing.
352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428 (all FE series engine) have the same bolt pattern at the bellhousing.
351M, 400, 429, 460, are the same at the bellhousing bolts..
Let me ask this agin.REGUARDLESS if your going small block/auto combo,OR big block/auto combo (not to be confused with which bolts to what),the people here who are running an automatic in what I'd guess pre '65 trucks, did the rear crossmember (where the bellhousing sits) cause any problems with your swap.If you bought yours this way, what do you think of the install/how'd they do it on yours.Thx,Al
The rear crossmember is not a problem. The trans mounts for the C6 bolt up. The crossmember that will cause problems is the radius arm support crossmember if it is riveted on. You need to grind off the rivets and use bolts when you put it back. I do not do 4x4's so anything I say has to do with 4x2's.
