assuming you have a 302 in your truck you can add 1.7 rockers how many miles are on the heads you might be able to just clean them paint them and throw them on. and if you have the motor still and depending on the shape its in you could always swap out the motors then depending on the year of your truck youll be upgrading to a roller motor as well.

What you have is gt40p heads. These heads do have some issues with header fitment due to revised spark plug angle, so do your homework on what will fit. There are some companies that make headers for the p's. With a decent port job expect gains in the 25 HP and 25 torque range. If bottom end is good, throw on em on and go. One other, you may need to back timing down a bit or run higher octane fuel due to decreased combustion chamber size....increasing compression ratio.

Good point cjben....I think 96 and 97 explorers had te regular gt 40 heads and in 98 went to the gt40p. Look at the casting info on the front right of the head. Give us the info...and that will help determine what you have. What year is your truck?

Ok, they should just say GT40 on the front right of the head. I would still expect about a 25 HP gain if you already have longtubes installed. Again, what year is your current truck? If it was a maf truck, they were rated at 205 HP brand new. As long as your compression and overall condition of the motor is good, I would estimate around 225 to 230 HP. A small cam like an comp xe264 may add another 15 HP....but you then I would recommend a tune to get everything working together. I wouldn't do any of this if the compression readings are weak, or the bottom end suspect.

You will definitely need some new valve springs, they should match the cam you plan to use.

i planned omn haveing it ported and polished and the heads are high mileage so wouldnt my best bet to be new springs and vavles? i have never done a head job or cam. but i was told my best bet was to go with a rv cam. more info on this project would be great thanks
