I wouldn't port and polish a head for a truck, unless you are going to race it.
What is your intended use for your truck. Let the board know some more details about what you want to do and these folks can get you going in the right direction.
my truck is never used for work or heavy hauling. the most it pulls is a small boat. i am a competive person by nature and my truck has that look that when im at a stoplight a dodge or chevy will pull next to me and want to run them i am usualy well underpowered and im sick of it. but the same token goes i dont want to kose top end power either. i would still like to be able to take them on the eway thanks
yes it is 2wd and im tryingv to get all the performance i can. i do already have some of the part to install. still trying ti figure out what to do with the heads i have which are gt 40 and still considering an rv cam wit it. just trying to get the best opinons whith what i have. and my truck is light with the syepside bed that is mostly fiberglass
What I think will be a good combination with out breaking the bank would be to basically put all the best stock components of a Mustang into the truck. SEFI, GT40 heads, Explorer intake, H.O. cam with 1.7 rockers ,plus additional bolt ons.
I run GT40P heads on my Mustang and without the correct headers, burnt plug wires is a concern (I run Ford Motorsports P specific headers on the stang for that reason.)
Have considered doing an Explorer motor swap into my truck to replace the tired 5.0 but have concerns about this issue since I don't know of anyone that makes P specific truck headers. Anyone know who makes these?
Also, to the OP, IIRC GT40 heads were available 96 and very early 97 only, then the switch to the P's. Easy ID between the two: GT40P's have 4 vertical bars cast into the ends of the heads, GT40's have only 3.
GT40 heads are a step up from the stock heads but it's not cost effective to spend more than about $500 total(including purchase price) on "fixing them up" when there are so many aftermarket heads available that outperform them by a wide margin for just a little more money. And if you shop the classifieds you just may find a lightly used set for about what it'll cost to refurbish the GT40's. As for a cam... the Comp XE264HR will certainly make more HP than the stock cam but you'll need matching valve springs and retainers as well, an alternative here would be to just add 1.7 rockers to get more lift from the stock cam.
as far as rge vavles themself should should they be replaced? and in another coment it was suggested not to port and polish why is that? an another guy was talking about swapping the entire explorer motor into his truck. i know the exp motor has the gt40 upper and lower intake but i was tols that the stock truck intake is better than the gt40 is this true? dont know if i should sell the intake or swap it out. i pais 180 for the explorer motor so after selling some part off it i think i do have some margin as far as price to redo the heads. i have already decided to go with long tubes but are there any suggestion on which would be the best match which the gt40 headsand for the money as most everypne else on here im on a budget as well which i why i shop jumpyards as much as possible thanks. o and i do have acess to another complete motor if anyone is interested. i live in northern ky
