Time to Winterize Your Projects

If you have a runner that will not be out and about during the winter months, then you may want to fill the gas tank. While parked for long periods, gas tanks can condense water inside. By keeping them filled during the winter, you may keep the water from forming and creating problems in the future. Have a happy winter. Jag

I had to replace my gas tank for that very reason.
It sat in Oregon for a few years with a 1/4 tank and had pin holes around the fuel level.

Not too mention the gas turns to varnish, and clogs up the strainer, and fuel filter. I suspect that was the main reason my '85 ranger ran so crappy (when it did run) was the fact that I did not drain the fuel tank before driving it after it sat for about 8 years. Stupidity on my part. Should have just saved my nickels and dimes, and had the whole system cleaned out.

Yeah Jim, Stabil fuel stabilizer helps with that one, for a while at least. But keeping the tank full of fuel is what you want to do to keep moisture from accumulating in the tank. With an empty metal tank, moisture in the air will condensate and cause corrosion within the tank, and will further contaminate what fuel is in there.
I do drain my small equipment tanks (usually plastic tanks) and I will run them, choke on choke off, until as much of the fuel is burned out of them as possible. In the case of plastic fuel cells, empty is best. Metal tanks are susceptible to moisture damage.
If you do leave a full tank in a sitting vehicle, even with stabilizer in the fuel, you need to make sure you fun the fuel out at some point and refuel. Usually AT LEAST once per year IMO. That reminds me, my 68 vette is sitting in the garage with a full tank of stabilized fuel that has been in there for 2 years now... Now Winter is setting upon us again. Crud, I need to find time to take care of my toys or just get rid of them... Sheeesh.

Have to get rid of your toys eh? Well, if you want to give away that '68 Vette, look no further. I'll take it in a heartbeat. Need a tax write off yet?
