2400mile vacation
Left Alvin for Goliad State Park on Friday PM, 9/2/2011. Arrived after hours and picked a nice shady pull-in site. Spent the weekend there visiting a buddy of mine, and left on Monday 9/5/2011 for our annual trip to Garner State Park. Arrived around 3PM after Labor day crowd had vacated the park and was able to rent a park host site with sewer hook-up. River was low, but still cold and wet. We stayed to work the river cleanup on Friday, and left early Sat. AM 9/10/2011 for Davis Mountains State Park in Fort Davis, Texas. Arrived that evening just before closing time and got a nice full hook-up pull-in site at lower end of a hilly loop. Were still in bed on Tuesday morning when we were almost knocked out of bed by a loud BANG!. An older couple had pulled in with their motor home towing an S-10 pickup. While attempting to unhook said PU, it got away from him and freewheeled down the hill right into the back of our RV. Bashed in the rear bumper and pushed us forward about 10 inches bending the front landing gear so much that they would not raise or lower. Found a local welder that came out and straightened them enough to operate, and on Friday 9/16/2011 left for Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Amarillo. Again found a nice pull-in site, but no sewer, so we used the park RR mostly. Beautiful scenery looking up at the canyon walls from our camp site. Left there on Tuesday, 9/20/2011 for Lake Whitney State Park North of Waco. Lake was about 16 feet below normal due to the massive Texas drought, but we were only one of 3 campers in the whole park, and it was a nice place to relax and wind down. Left Thursday, 9/22/2011 for home. Unloaded the RV on Friday and took it into shop for permanent repair of the crash damage. Thanks to a really nice welder,William Parrott of Marfa, Texas, our trip was not ruined by this incident.
Sounds like a great trip. Garner is the busiest park in Texas. Davis mountains, good choice, and Palo Duro, hard to beat the 2nd largest canyon in the United States. What is so unique, its so flat there and then all of a sudden, there is this massive canyon.
Whitney, sad, over 20 feet down now and a beautiful area. Great Trip!!!
