ok so i dont tow much, but in about a month i'm going to have to take our cougar down for some work. since its going to be snowing and icy we decided we're going to trailer it because that old car is not set up for winter driving.
so the combined weight of the trailer and car is 5,700lbs with no trailer brakes.
i'll only be going about 10 miles each way with the car loaded and another 15 with just the trailer.
i'm perfectly fine with winter driving as i've done it all my life, but i'm wondering if there are any odd issues that could arise in very slick conditions with a trailer. i know my stopping distance will be amazingly long i also run studded snow tires on my truck so hopfully that will help.
heres the load this summer...it will be exactly the same. towed wonderful with no issues but that was in the middle of summer.
I'm sure you will be fine, just as you stated prepare and slow down sooner, be smooth. I have towed my bass boat and a 28' enclosed trailer in icy/slushy/snowy condition. Although the boat trailer has surge brakes, and the cargo has electric. By trying to stay smooth i have not had any issues.
Just be very very careful.. plenty of room to stop or manuever because without trailer brakes it is soo very easy to jacknife and that will ruin your whole day..
them uhaul trailers have surge brakes. youll be fine if no on pulls out in front of you on the ice. i doulbt we will have bad conditions on the road unless its rain/snowing while yoru towing it, they do a good job on the road to keep them pretty clear all winter in town.
Second, just becareful on turns. the trailer can tend to push the rear end of the truck sideways, even at very slow speeds. I've seen it happen to an Excursion towing a Wrangler, so just be aware.
