what would you reccommend i use for gas, 87, 89, or 91? my truck has a 400 with an edelbrock intake carb and air cleaner and an RV cam. thanks! also, i live in the middle of nowhere and the nearest place with 91 is 55 miles away so i usually use 89
The only difference between 87 and 91 is the resistance to detonation. Unless your engine is higher compression, you dont need to worry about pinging, and so no need to use higher octane.
2x with Devino246. 87 octane and yer good. Anything higher is just a waste of money.
Not til 10:1 or higher compression would you need to consider higher octane gasoline. Even then, vehicles today have knock sensors and can dial back the timing in cases of detonation (or a bad tank of gas).
I use 87 octane BP with Invigorate in all my 5 Fords (one of which is very much the same as yours), 1 Subaru, 2 Gold Wings and my Wheelhorse Tractor / SnowBlower / Tiller.
I use high test gas with NO alcohol in my '74 Triumph T150V Trident.
i usually run 91 to 93 in my truck. depends what they have at the place i stop.
i usually try to go to the busier places. i feel the gas is better due to higher sales.
it probably does not make a diference. i honestly never thought 87 would be good for
these old engines. but i will probably start to use 87 since so many do. i just want the
truck to last.
The octane rating has nothing to do with the "quality" of the gas. If you want the freshest gas you can get then 87 from a popular store is what you want. People buy less of the higher octanes so there is more time between those tanks getting filled with new gas.
Also, higher octane fuels actually burn slower than lower octane. Unless your engine has higher compression and requires a higher octane fuel then you are making less power with 93 over 87 octane. Google it if you don't believe me.
I've ran 87 n my 390 pretty much the whole time i've had the truck. I do use 89 every now and then, considering i hear from a lot of guys sayin that today's gas is crap compared to years ago. I put in 1.5 gallons of 93 last week for the hell of it and now it takes a while for my truck to start. So i won't be doing that anymore.
