Yeah, the DP sure is not the easiest to use. The documentation is lame. Very precise, but not the same choices as the screen presents. The book must be two or three models out of date.

I put 87 octane back in my truck, I have been running the 93 octane tune, backed off five degrees as I can only buy 91 octane gas.
It worked great on the 91 setting but I put 87 in and it pinged, as I would expect.
So I tried backing the timing back, but it still pinged.
The manual says you can back down the timing alone to allow it to run on the 87.
No joy.
So I put in the 87 tune and it still pinged. That is on a 60% 91 / 40% 87 mix of fuel.
So I went into options and chose reset all options.
I then put the shifts back to the 100 position, and lowered my shift RPM ranges to 5000.
No ping, shifts pretty good, but I do miss the higher power.
I will probably go back next tank to premium. The extra 'snap' is too addictive.

Talking Hypertech tuner pinging fix

chrisadams
just so you know i installed a hypertech 87 octane tune to my truck and got pinging, i was using am/pm gas because it was the cheapest, so a friend told me that am/pm's 87 octane gas rarley came in at 87 octane levels, so i switch to shell 87 octane gas and my pinging has complete stop. i now only use shell gas or mobil, cheveron, 76. am/pm was only saving me .04 cents a gallon but i figured the future damage cause by the pinging would cost alot more.
try using a brand name 87 octane gas and see if it helps. that is what worked for me.

Chevron 87 octane, the premium I was using was from Costco. Arco has a pretty bad rep in Southern California. I would use it in my motor home (big block, eats anything) but I tend away from it in my good cars.
It wasn't the gas, it's the rather strange settings on the DP. Just back from vacation, and I will be messing with it soon.
