I have a 1973 Ford F-100, and the rear main seal is leaking, and i know its the rear main i have already degreased the engine, and pin pointed the leak, what is the best way to go about changing the rear main seal, the motor is a 302 2BBL, and suggestions would be appreciated, thanks
Disconnect the motor mounts, jack up and block the motor, pull oil pan, loosen the main caps (remove the rear main cap), remove old seal and replace with new seal...as noted in the prior post, you're already in there so might as well replace the oil pump while you're at it, it's cheap insurance, same goes for the oil pan gasket obviously....expect to spend an entire Saturday laying under your truck, a cold beverage....or three, helps ease the misery.....at least a little bit.
Loosen all, remove the rear, it makes installing the top half of the seal much much easier and you're less likely to damage it.
I have a 390 and the setup is very similar - i ended up loosening all the caps, and pulling the rear one - made it much easier. I'm sure if you have done this before you can do with only the rear cap off, but if this is the first or second time, go ahead and loosen them all - you will thank your self
