power valves again!

Ok so I gotta get my truck on the road. Ive been blowing out power valves for the last year. I have the check valve eliminator for the power valve but I haven,t decided on which power valve I should actually be using. There seems to be a lot of choices. I'm running a factory 460 4spd with a glass pack, does anyone know off hand which one to use or a good reference site? also has anyone use the block off kit? it says it's for flat trackin. thanks in advance- justin

I had the same problem with my holley on my 351. I tried everything and the only thing left to do was change carbs. I put an edelbrock performer on mine and havent had a problem since. I bought mine used so it wasnt an expensive fix but a new one can be a pricey fix.

You don't want to eliminate the power valve, the truck would be going lean all the time.
Flat track cars are WFO all the time.
Holley's site will tell you you want a power valve just below 1/2 your idle vacuum.

Install a power valve protection check valve like that from Specter or the Holley 125-500 kit and stop having to replace it all the time.

26 years and never had a power valve failure, however, when I do open up the carb I always replace the power valve as a routine and I always use a genuine Holly 6.5.........stay away from brand X and 2 stage P/V's.

I have the check valve eliminator kit ready to install just wanted to make sure I was replacing the power valve with correct one. I thought the factory one was 2 stage. I'm gona call around and see if I can find a rebuild kit locally, if not I guess I will order one from holley. I wouldn't mind replacing carb with a performer but I've herd they won't smog in california. anyone know if that's true? thanks for the input.

If you are blowing power valves there has to be a root cause. I used to own a carburetor and tune up shop locally. Some of todays issues may be the crap the government is forcing us to buy to help the corn farmers. The valve needs to have the correct Holley or at least Holley style gasket and torque it to 125 in-lbs. (Holley tech rep told me "as tight as you can get it holding the metering block in your hand"). You also need to be sure the accelerator pump tube has new O-rings and lube them when you install it. A leak here will act just like a blown power valve. Back fires are death for Holley power valves, the check valve kit is supposed to protect it, but doesn't always work. Knock on wood, mine is still good from the last time I changed it a number of years ago. You are correct in the factory one being a 2 stage, the idea is a little extra gas at around 11-12 in vacuum and full at around 6 in. (I would have to look at the Holley PN to be sure). This allowed Ford to use leaner main jets, but not lose to much power at part throttle.

According to this; http://www.holley.com/data/TechServi...%20Listing.pdf

On page 15, you can see that you want a 125-215, 216, 217 or 218 power valve, depending on your specific list number.
As far as I know the ONLY way to get these particular 2-stage power valves is with the 3-1346 rebuild kit.
They only offer the 125-206, 207 & 208 ones on their site.
Holley Performance Power Valves Products

Hope this helps.

I called RPM and the guy looked up some part numbers 3-1346 (rebuild kit) and 25r-609-8a (power valve). I went to bring the truck around to the garage and the battery is dead. Anyways I can't buy anything until friday but I'm going to check and see if I can find em any ways. And yes i know one will come in the rebuild kit and I will probably buy the whole kit.

They must be there for something. (a half eaten bag of Doritos?)
Fire ants, Big black carpenter ants, tiny little ants???

Try some boric acid and sugar water.
They might like it and bring it back into their nest.
