bought the rebuild kit from holley this time, little more money but I think going cheap was my biggest mistake last time. we'll see how it goes when it gets here. Hopefully it doesn't take to long to get here.
finally fired up the 86 and it was not pretty. Had to jump start it and it ran terrible. The holley kit took forever to get here but it was worth the wait, the quality of the gaskets and rubber diaphragms far superior. It's cleaned, reassembled and ready to to go back in the truck. But when I went install it I realized the egr plate has a gasket under it that was totally destroyed. Maybe that was part of the problem in the first place? It was leaking pretty bad I think. I'm going to see if I can find one now. Anyone else made that oops before?
Well, I now have 4 extra E8TZ-9447-A / CG-536-B under plate gaskets.
This part was obviously updated after they stopped using carburetors in pickups.
(maybe for motor homes?)
I know chassis/driveline vehicles were using carbs until at least 1989.
They are a funny powdered pink looking material, not the heatproof laminated ones I'm used to seeing.
Anyway, rockpile, if you can't find one of the above numbers locally shoot me a PM with your street address and I'll send one out Priority Mail.
Those gaskets come in 2 styles, I suggest the one that has a metal mesh sandwiched between the paper elements. It will last a lot longer than the plain paper element. I believe it is available at NAPA 5-6 bucks. Coat both sides with anti seize.

Why would one want to coat a paper gasket with anti-seize?
The EGR plate base gasket sees a lot of heat coming from the intake manifold's heated crossover.
They tend to burn out at the 'ear'.
I think Beetle was saying to coat the perforated metal -exhaust manifold type- gasket with anti seize.
I don't know why.
The pink gaskets I got were a new part in '88.
There must be a reason Ford decided to change to this material.
