he owns a small trucking company where he does a lot of the work too. his stepson is a mechanic, he drives a F350 7.3L too. But i agree he was wrong this time
Point blank..... Your neighbor is an idiot! Your engine does not need back pressure. The less the better
The only engine design that has the need for a muffler/ back pressure system is a gasoline two cycle as the muffler is acting as an expansion chamber pulling fresh mixture into the cylinder, diesel and gasoline engines only have mufflers to keep people happy not the engine! Back pressure is the enemy! Period!

They only sound good at idle.
Throttle one of them up and I would rather have a muffler on.
I for one have to disagree, my Cummins is straight piped 4 inch turbo back with a 6 inch tip and it sounds GOOOOOD it makes people notice at idle and when I am pulling hills or going through a tunnel or just happen to have some one next to me I always have the passenger window cracked so I can hear it talk, she sounds really good pulling 30+ pounds of boost.
I guess I am just nuts for a turned up diesel though, cause I think Cummins, Cat, Detroit, Power Stroke and D-max all sound good when then are rippin!

While I won't argue with you when there making boost they sound awesome. Not under boost just cruising they all sound like crap in my opinion
i thought i would just do an update on this thread, I did what i said and flipped the s pipe and welded in a straight pipe in place of the muffler, exits in the same spot until I find a 5" tip and run it like a duramax
I got a Diamond Eye 3.5 to 4 inch down pipe for my 7.3 so I wouldn't have to beat the firewall up to make it fit. I have all the other stuff to run my single stack up the back of the cab inside the frame rail so my kids (and me) don't burn the crap out of themselves on it. I even bought a 4 inch rain cap. I am thinking of painting it all flat black, I bought high temp BBQ paint so it would not look all dirty when the smoke comes out
I am not sure just when I will get around to the install, it should be rather easy as got the nice band clamps for it, I even got a nice stainless flex to put in it so I don't have the same problems with breaking that I have with my Cummins, 4x4, not that I think my f450 will flex or ever be taken anywhere the Dodge has been....
I talked to a muffler shop and got a quote from them to build it... they wanted more for the down pipe then I paid for everything!
I need to hurry up on it since I am waiting on my gauge install till I have it in, so I can weld a bung in the down pipe elbow for the pyro.
.....Yes I know it is not the best place for a pyro, but it is a work truck that never tows heavy... all that means in that location is I don't go over 1100 degrees.
