We got a 2002 F250 7.3l AT, so far its bone stock performance wise. I want to do a muffler delete with just the stock 3.5" pipe and then put like a 5" tip on the end. Not ready to run a full 4" turbo back so Im hoping this will make it sound a little better.
I talked to a neighbor who said it will harm the engine because the valves need backpressure to function properly, I think thats wrong cause dont the turbo provide the backpressure needed? Wouldnt a free flowing exhaust HELP the engine perform better?
Ive searched and found answers but dad wanted me to post my own topic to be absolutely sure it wont damage anything.
Also we pull a 9K pound camper a few times a year so would a straight pipe help or hurt pulling power?
It's actually better for your truck since you use it to tow. Doubtful your EGTs ever get that high with a stock tune and only towing 9,000lbs, but it will reduce the temps, and lower EGTs are always better.
I agree with the others, I've been running straight pipes for a few years, And I pull quite a bit.
Although I dont think my neighbors care for my high idle...
I did the exact same thing 7 years ago and 100k miles and I have had ZERO problems with the motor. I cut the muffler out and welded in a piece of 3.5" and drove it like i stole it and wouldn't change it back. As far as inspections go, i havnt had a problem.
when i first did that i just put a turndown on where i cut out the muffler.worked great and egts were much lower.i live in california and theres no problem whatsoever with smog.all they care about is a cat and my 7.3l is a non-catalyst motor so you should be good
well for noise i think im alright there, my neighbor has a straight piped cummins.
the neighbor that told me that has been working on cars for years, owns a trucking company and usually knows what hes talking about, but i didnt believe him this time.
he owns a small trucking company where he does a lot of the work too. his stepson is a mechanic, he drives a F350 7.3L too. But i agree he was wrong this time
