on my 11' F350 PSD 4x4 the engine block, driveshafts, and some steering components are not painted? I have to say the frame actually has paint on it, not some waxxy coating you can take off with a thumbnail. Thats a big improvement from years past. But... WTF? is with Ford and no paint? IMHO some of the chems being used as ice melt are sufficient means to build trucks to a "marine" grade. I guess in Dearborn, Michigan that means plastic, huh? Ford needs to recognize that the NE United States is prob. bar none the toughest place their trucks will see service, and design and build them accordingly. They have improved, but not far enough.
Like this? I always thought it was just surface rust and does not necessarily mean it will continue to deteriorate and crumble into a pile of dust. At least I hope it doesn't, these parts kinda keeps the wheels on and driveshaft together.
I guess not painting parts keeps the price lower, 'cause the truck is expensive enough as it is.
Are these parts meant to be painted? Should I go under the truck and spray paint metal parts?

For what purpose? Appearance? Certainly not for corrosion protection or functionality.
These components have been used on trucks for DECADES. And to my knowledge they've never been painted. Find me someone with a rusted-through steering knuckle, axleshaft, or yoke. A friend with his 1979 F250 never had a problem with this...why do you think you would?
I just think it looks like crap. My 2010 had a lot less painted on it than my 2011, but Tom is probably right. Those parts are solid steel. The rest of the truck will be in dust before those fail due to rust.
What I don't understand is how a brand new "Rancho" shock can have rust on it :/.
You have a point, Steve. Every time I got a new truck I would climb under there and think about the rusty components on my brand-new truck. It does look bad, but in the end the only folks who are likely to be under there are mechanics...and I just don't think they care!
In the end I tend to think that these trucks are getting expensive enough that many who used to be able to afford them now can't. So would I rather spend my hard earned dollars on some paint that wouldn't make any difference other than make me feel better for that three minutes each month I spend under the truck?
I have always Painted under my trucks as soon as i got it home from delivery. Does it help? Just makes me feel better not seeing rusted parts. it surely doesn't make it last any longer. A 16 o/z can of feel good.lol
