Did you cut both the fill and vent tubes?

But when the nozzle does click off, you are still several gallons short of a full tank!

You can be happy with that, or you can keep clicking the nozzle for the next 10 minutes to get it full.

Or you can do the Harpoon mod so that the nozzle doesn't click off until the tank is actually full

On my shortbed, before the Harpoon mod it would only take 26-28 gallons before the nozzle started clicking off,
after the Harpoon mod it takes 30-30.5 gallons when it clicks off the first time!

so even though my fuel gauge is past full on the dash, there is still room for another 3 gallons or so?

Which for a 29 gallon tank....is saying something. That is unless you've swapped to a larger tank at some point.

Yip, these trucks are designed with gasoline tanks...so expansion room is engineered into the fuel system. You don't want gasoline to leak out of the tank when it expands from the warmth of the engine. That's why the NTSB among other safety agencies strong discourage filling your gas burner (all gas powered rides) after the nozzle clicks off the first time. Diesel on the other hand...fill 'er to the rim with Brim.

PS: the fuel gauge is just like the temperature gauges on the dash...over glorified idiot lights. Through I'm willing to bet it's closer to actually being right than the coolant/trans temp gauges.

Right, all cars are like that, aren't they? That's why you drive for 100 miles or more before the gauge starts to move. The float is pinned against the top of the tank. After the harpoon, if its done right, you can drive even farther before it starts to move.

...um...no. Just the vent tube since the instructions I used didnt mention the fill tube. Figures I missed something. Might get around to it tomorrow or next weekend.

Thanks!

Well, use your own judgement. It's a big debate around here. My opinion is you should cut them both to minimize foam and maximize capacity.

The nozzle clicks off when the fuel level reaches the vent tube and is forced up into it, so all you need to cut is the vent tube. It won't hurt to cut the fill tube also but there is no reason to.

I only cut my vent tube and it works perfect

Five years later and I still haven't gone back into fix it.

Maybe one day.
