I was looking at the intake snorkel on my 02 250 V10 and noticed it terminates in a small section of dead space behind the grill. I was thinking that if I cut a 3" hole with a hole saw in the plastic wall in front of the snorkel that I would have a decent cold air intake. If i put a scoop into the hole it could be a ram air also as it would be in the airstream right behind the grill.
I did a search on this with no results. If it's a known mod ( i can't be the only one to think of this ) please direct me to the info.
Anybody who has done this please let me know if it did anything for you.
Thanks cookie.
I found some info and it's exactly what i thought i would do.
I'd still like to hear from anyone who did the mod and if there were any noticeable performance gains.
Casey or cookie-is the intake the same for the gas as the diesel? I run high temps at times and am always looking for ways to cool it down. I cannot understand why the air intake terminates in a dead space with little apparent ventilation.

Ram / Cold Air Mod?
Might want to think about attaching some screening material onto the hole -- unless you want to clog the filter with dead bugs!
I wanted to zoodad my truck, but wouldn't this mod let in lots of moisture when driving through the rain? I know it's not the same as submerging the grill, but going 65 MPH during a decent downpore has got to bring some water into the air intake, doesn't it? Seriously, I'm asking...

Probably not enough to worry about. It is not a scoop and there is a space between the hole and the snorkel. The factory snorkel and airbox are at an upward angle and there is a plastic cone on the filter element that the air and possible moisture would hit first. There is a weep hole to drain water already in the box. The screen is a good idea and would further reduce the potential for water entering the intake.
I just happened to have some stainless screen around from a custom bike airbox mod I did so I just put it in. It's form fit on the backside of the fiberglass wall.

Ram / Cold Air Mod?
Cool. By form-fit do you mean that it is held in place by friction? Just curious exactly how you attached it... I'm considering doing the same, if you actually notice any performance or otherwise gains.
It's cut large friction fit into the space. I secured it in one place with a sheet metal screw.
I'll post back as soon as i drive it and let you know whether it did anything noticeable or not.
