Let start by saying I know little about tuners. How they do what they do, or which is the right one to get. I need more power for towing. My stock 1999 F250 7.3 2 WD auto trans needs a bit more power in the mountains.
A chip or a tuner? I met a guy this summer that showed my his tuner. He has pretty much the same truck as mine. A device that he kept in a case that he plugged into his plug under the dash to change the tune. I think it was a Super Chip Tuner. Seemed pretty simple.. I watched the DP tuner install video, does not seem simple?
The most boost I have ever seen out of my truck is about 20 max. Will adding a tuner increase the boost without doing anything else or is the power gained in some other way?

Don't go by what seems simple or what doesn't appear simple as the means of choosing something. For 7.3s, I think most would recommend going with the DP Tuner. I would go to the year specific 7.3 forum and ask around there to be sure. Although I would be willing to bet that they most would get DP. I'm also sure that most would help you through the install as well.

Don't correlate more boost equals more power. I don't have a stock turbo on my 6.0 and it makes more power at 10 PSI then does the stock turbo at 10 PSI. That a/m turbo can go up to 52 PSI (at least as much as I've had it up to), but it rarely "sees" that much PSI. It's more about efficiency then how much boost is being built.
However, chips/tuners are about performance enhancements for the most part, so increase HP/TQ is the main objective. Now if go with a custom tuner such as DP, you have a lot more options and don't have to increase HP/TQ output if you don't want to. Off the shelf chips/tuners such as Superchips, no can do. You are stuck with what they are programmed to do from the factory.
