My 89 7.3 runs great once it starts. Warms restarts are very quick. But cold its really hard to get going. I wonder is a glow plug bad? How do you test the glow plugs?
How long does the WTS light stay on for? the WTS light should stay on for ~10 sec. if it does not stay oon that long then you have at least one bad plug.
Testing is easy..... all you need is a 12V test light.
Connect the test light leed to the pos bat post. take the connectors off the glow plugs. touch the light to the glow plugs. if the light lights up then the plug is good. no light=bad plug.
If you do have any bad plugs replace them with motorcraft/beru only. part #ZD9. some guys have found them at oriley's auto parts. i got mine from rockauto.com. they were $10/plug. unless you have to do not get them from the dealer cuz they are $25/plug at the dealer.
Light goes on maybe 2 seconds. There is a click about every 2 seconds for about 10 seconds. But the light goes out quick. Then it clicks for a while. Then the clicks stop and I try to start. Which it doesnt do very well.
Yep you have probly all but one or two plugs dead. the clicking is normal. it is the relay turning on and off the glow plugs. the system is working just fine. you just have some bad plugs.
You will want to crank the engine over once the WTS light goes out. the clicking is just to clear up startup smoke once it is running.
When I tried to start the truck in the past I followed the instructions in the owners manual. Its says to depress the gas pedal (diesel pedal?) halfway to the floor. Yesterday I was working on it and thought "I got to try to start it again". Well I FORGOT to push on the pedal.

Started like a shot!
That still doesn't fix the cold start issue. If you get in, turn on the key and the wait to start light comes on for a couple of seconds when COLD, then the controller starts to fast cycle (rapid clicks) you have 1 or more glow plugs that are not working.
Pushing the throttle down when the engine is cold only sets the high idle solenoid. The truck should still start either way.
I was wrong about the 2 seconds. When you FIRST turn on the ignition, yeah its like 8 seconds till the light goes out. It on repeated attempts that the light goes out in two seconds. Thats where I got the 2 seconds from.
Holding the pedal halfway to the floor like the OM says just doesnt work for mine.
