Test/inspect 4wd

As I mentioned in another thread I am looking at a 99 F350 Diesel Auto 4x4 tomorrow. A ford dealer already looked at the truck for me but with the 4wd they only engaged the lockouts on the front and barely drove it on dry pavement before they disengaged it. they suggested I test it off-road.

I've never had lockout wheels or tested 4wd before. Is there something I should do or not do to make sure the 4wd works as it should?

thanks!
Keith

I always find a big parking lot and lock it in. Turn some tight circles and abuse it a little bit. If there's any probs you'll hear it on pavement. Make sure there's no clicking or popping noises and all the tires a hooking up

If you drive on pavement in 4 wheel drive, you will probably get a noise from drive train wind up. I would suggest off road, but if you do do it on pavement, you will feel the steering wheel jump and will know that it is working.
I'm sure someone else will jump in here soon.

I personally would not run it on dry pavement making tight turns, that's some serious binding. Try locking the hubs, throw it in 4lo, put it in reverse and stomp on it. If it tries to throw you out the windshield I'd say 4wd is working. If you light the back tires up... not working. Short of taking it offroad, that's all I'm coming up with. Someone else might have a better suggestion.

Thats a much worse idea.

Just go to a parking lot like suggested. Dont use a lot of throttle. Truck will stop itself when it starts binding up, just straighten out and put it back in 2wd.

As said take it in a parking lot turn it all the way and it should rock the front end side to side hence the binding, it's not your truck yet so if something brakes then we just saved you a lot of money. If your still not sure take it down a gravel road in 4hi. Stand on the brakes and keep it to the floor for about 5 seconds and let off the brakes (boosted launch). If the rear tires spin you know it's not working. If no tires spin then you know its working. Like I said it's not your truck yet and you can test the 4wd and brakes at the same time. The truck should be able to take this kind of abuse with no strange sounds or feelings afterwords. Just don't do it everytime you take off
