84 F150 302 4v seems to run fine at idle and rev it up --- sounds great --- pull every other plug wire at the cap starting with #1 and it acts just the same.
Sounds great, rev it up no change. Pull every other wire starting with #2 and it will not start at all. There is fire at every tower on the cap.
Why not leave all the plug wires on and drive it? Apparently I am missing something, what is the actual problem with the engine? It's obvious this engine is not stock, since it has a 4bbl carb.
You're right it's been modified. Rebuilt the engine and added a bit duration to the cam, installed a 4v manifold and topped it with an edlebrock 4bbl. This thing really ripped but it has sat for about 6--7 yrs. The funny thing is that, as
I said before, it sounds ok at idle, and revving with no load, but when we drive it it is real doggy -- acts like a 4 cyl. definately not what it used to be. Pulling the wires at the distributor starting with #1 and pulling every other one makes no difference in the no load performance or revving but pull the wires starting with #2 and every other one and --- nothing, no start no nothing. When we rev it up no real 4bbl growl like you would expect to hear.
Crud in the carb? Brain damage? Timing off THAT MUCH?
I bet one of the jets in the carb is clogged. Your intake manifold is a dual plane, and it's sort of like a two story house, with some runners going to one side of the engine, and some going to the others. One jet feeds one level(or story) of the intake, and the other jet feeds the other level. There is enough fuel going through for the idle circuit, but when you rev it, the main fuel system kicks in and it's probably starving for fuel.
I would get a rebuild kit and clean it up and install the kit.
Bingo Dave, I think you nailed it. We've had a number of heads together in this thing and one guy said "Well just dump some fuel down the carb and see what happens". We tried it and it really came to life. Pulled the carb off and put a kit in it. When we cleaned it there was one little flake of crud that may have been blocking a jet. It sounds great now. Got the old 4bbl roar back. Couldn't road test it yet (found a leak in the radiator).
Thanks, the way you explained it makes perfect sense. We all learned something'
