got a holley 600 cfm carb, jsut put a rebuild kit in it. I bought the truck out of a pasture, I played around and got it running, drove it home. It was running very ruff, back firing a little and jsut not response to throttle. I since ahve put a rebuild kit on it, got it running but it still does not run any better. Any ideas here on what i sould do, I have had a guy come over and try to fine tune it, but it still is not right. Just trying to get this thig where it will start and run. Ohh it did idle a little smoother when i closed the chock by hand. I ahve not changed any plug or plug wires as of yet. This is coming next., Thanks
The carb is often blamed when it's actually other issues causing your problem, you need to start with your timing, throw a light on it and get the timing dialed in then go from there, sounds as though it might be a timing issue but it's hard to diagnose until you confirm the timing is right, then you can go from there and check your advance, both mechanical and vacuum then get into plugs, wires, carb, etc.
thanks highboy, i was leaning toward that. i guess i will ahve to check my timing the old fashion way firts. getting #1 at topd dead, and pulling the cap off. my balancer is not marked right now.
Sounds like you are not getting enough fuel.
When you kited the carb did you clean and rod out every hole and passage. If any one passage is not completely clean, it's not going to run right.
When you said it had been sitting for a long time, gas turns to varnish that is difficult to remove. I have seen varnish completely block fuel lines and damage pumps.
I second "JBradley 500" replace all fuel filters and put new ones on. I like to put a clear plastic filter on under the truck and near the tank as possible this way I can monitor to see how much rust is coming from the tank.
If it ran better by closing the choke you may have some vacuum leaks, look for rotted or broken , disconnected hoses, if you keep having problems you can unhook every line from the motor and plug the fittings to make sure, just remember where they go.
