Does anyone have any experience shipping trannies? I have a FE-pattern C6 that I am trying to sell, but I have no idea how to ship the dern thing. It weighs 140 pounds empty, and UPS and the like want exorbitant amounts for the something that heavy. I figger that machine shops and repair shops must ship these things all the time at a much lower cost. How do they do it?
Best way to ship something like that is by common carrier (Yellow Freight, CCX, local shipping companies). It has to be palleted, and secured. I dont know how someone goes about this, but its probably just calling up your local carrier, finding where there dock is, and see if they can pallet it for you. Some carriers offer this service.
karlsd,
Contact Averitt Express. They are located all over the TN area. They should be able to handle the pickup and delivery of your tranny. They should also be able to provide information about packaging. They are pretty much nationwide. They also have their own air freight division. I drove for them for a few years, and I know that they will handle your freight right.
Good luck....west
You can usually find a free pallet at most freight places or small (not Home Depot type) lumber yards. One lumber yard I knew gave away pallets made from MAHOGANY.
You can find suitable shipping supplies in small quantity at Staples, the plastic banding and such. The stuff they sell does not require any crimpers for the banding. You might be able to find it at Grainger too, though they tend to concentrate on the steel strapping.
If you have a pickup truck, find a local carrier and drop it off at their dock and let them use a fork lift to take it off the truck. In doing these things a reasonable nature will get you more than complaining and shopping for price over $10 between carriers.
you can call the machine shops and ask them. the ones around here will gladly tell you. you can make one out of wood. make a wood frame around the tranny. put one piece under the rear mount and another about the center of the bell housing and bolt that in with the wood frame so if it moves it will only move with the frame you made.
