Actually, is this required for any functionality of the vehicle? If I wanted to cap the vacuum port that this connected to, will I create any issues - other than the light not coming on when I am getting "low fuel ecomony"?

This was an option, capping the vacuum port will only disable the light, it won't creat any other issues.
