Synthetic Oil
Thanks for the info. Sounds like it really doesn't matter all that much which way you go for the average driver....Jay
I think it makes a difference when JMateau has the oil he already purchased looking at him. Why not use it since it's bought and paid for and it won't do any harm in the short run. As you might have read from some of my posts, I am being educated in motor oils by a friend of mine that works at a research center and motor oil is his bag. I still ask him" what is the best motor oil"? His answer "fresh". He drives a 91 Ford F-150 SC and his choice of oil is 10w-30 Chevron Supreme. The truck has 180,000 miles on it and get changed every 3500 miles with a Motorcraft filter. Good enough for him and all data I have from his database suggests he is using the best oil for average driving. My next oil change will be Chevron Supreme.
On the other hand, I'm very picky about the filter I use. In that case its the Motorcraft FL-820s all the way because it has the silicone antidrain valve AND the Ford designed bypass valve. Not everyone will feel the way I do, but I simply value those features more than filtering ability. The only other cross reference brand with both these features is the Mobil 1 201. But I can buy four 820s for the price of one M1. Like I said, I can be bought.
TCExp,
Mobil had advertized the extended oil changes to 25,000 miles with their Tri-synthetic which is a synthetic blend. The newer product Super Syn is a PAO/ester based product and Mobil now recommends that you follow the auto manufacturers oil change schedule. Amzoil which is noted for extended oil chnages is also recommending oil changes at every 6 mos or having a complete oil analysis run to insure the oil is still good. I think once folks get the message about synthetics they will become a specialty item. Most synthetics do not beat most dino oil in HT/HS tests. Example Motorcraft 5w-20 is 2.60 and Mobil One is 2.60. Not much advantage there. But as stated before, the synthetics resist thermal beakdown much better than dinos and if your vehicle needs that type of protection then you are a prime candidate to use it. The average driver isn't in that group.
Mobil advertized 15,000 miles and you had to use their filter, Amsoil advertises 25,000 miles with amsoil filter changes at 12,500 miles, upto 35,000 miles on their servere service 0w-30
