1995 cold cough

Hi i have a 1995 7.3l powerstroke, when the engine is cold it will cough and sputter a little bit and sometimes it will do this enough to the point that it will die completely. Hope you guys can help me out, Thanks.

Does it clear up and run ok after a minute or two? Could have some bad glow plugs. More info is always good.

And ya, welcome to fte.

sorry about that, it is verry hard to start and it billows white smoke when its starting. it only coughs for a couple minites then it runs fine, it also chirps a little bit but that might not be related?

That sounds like glow plugs or glow plug relay to me.

Replace them all, they're only 80 bucks or so. Get motorcraft, NO AUTOLITES as they will swell in the head.

There are may things that can cause the symptoms you are describing.. Another test would be to make sure the oil is new , You can also check the Oil temp sensor with a scanner to see if it agrees with ambient air temp(timing ) at cold start up . You can also ohm the GPs to get an idea of their condition before changing them ...

Once the engine is running ,the GP should have a minimal effect on it staying running ...

Good idea to follow Rick's lead, he's got lots more experience and knowledge about things. I think the gp's should ohm out at around 1ohm, give or take a little.

It will cough because the cylinder is not warm enough to burn the fuel in it. So it's basically a miss.

Once its running that should be more of a compression issue ...Or maybe even a poppet issue ..

Ok so i changed the glow plugs and it starts hella lot easier now but it is still sputtering and coughing for a couple minutes. Im wondering if it could be as simple as the fuel filter? Also it did have a fuel leak when I got it but i got that fixed. Still chirps some, seems to get louder, although mabe its just anoying me more haha, thanks for the help so far and thanks in advanced.
