Roadside Help !!

I have a friend, with a 2002 E450 7.3 diesel, in a small motorhome. He is on the roadside south of Amarillo, TX, his MH is in limp home mode. He left San Antonio, and made it to Big Springs before it acted up. He took it to the Ford dealer, and they checked for codes and found none - his CEL is not on. They said that it might be "screens" in the tank clogged.is this a roadside fix (I think not), any other suggestions ? Any suggestions as to who in the are he can contact with knowledge of these things ?

A possibility for a roadside fix, would be to blow air back into the tank from the fuel line going to the pump, that would keep from having to drop the tank. We do have some brothers in that area or relatively close. If I was sure it was restricted fuel pressure I would do it on the side of the road in a heart beat, Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

You could also plumb a temporary fuel pressure gauge to check it, into the fuel bowl, that would help point to issues as well.

As seen from my user name - I actually have a D'max, but ALWAYS loved the 7.3.

Now, from the OLD GMC motorhome days, they had socks on the inlet of the fuel line & we'd just back blow with ait to rupture the socks, then add inline filters, which it looks like basically the long term fix is. But now for the roadside repair - if he puts ATF, or diesel clean, or ?? (solvent) in the line, then back blows it thru the screens - think that will help?

That could help, but it would only be good enough to get him home if at all. He needs to find the root problem.

I dont think any of those will eat of big chunks well enough.

At a minimum, add a pre-pump filter, no matter how small, as the pump inlet can easily clog.

This is a STUPID design ! Filter screens, working as a basket, that doesn't self clean by backflow, inside of the tank ! How many have had their vehicles go into LHM because of this ? How many have reported to NHTSA ? Will Ford do a re-call - not unless forced by NHTSA.

Still looking for a reliable mechanic south of Amarillo.

See another, kinda related thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nk-lining.html

NHTSA wouldnt listen, and Ford cant be forced to recall because of it. The government can only force safety issues to be recalled. This is not a safety issue.

I don't think you'll find anyone here argue with you over that statement. IIRC, Ford *tried* this idea with the '99-'03 trucks, and also came to the same conclusion you did.
