Not sure what to make of the brakes. Each time I press the brakes I hear a loud air sound like they are loosing air somewhere. The brakes are a little spongy but for the most part work reasonably well. Any ideas what is going on?
Well they don't use air so the closest thing to the "sssssss" of air escaping that I can think of, is a really loose shoe that is barely making contact. Can you tell if it is front or rear? And if you REALLY jam the brakes hard does the "sssssss" sound go away or does it get louder? What about any grinding noise?
sounds like you have power brakes , big canister behind master cylinder , it runs off vacuum from engine when they go bad they hiss when you step on brake pedal . if money is tight you can disconnect and cap vacuum hose . power boosters are a little pricey and a p.i.t.a to r&r

How much to replace canister? Or do I need to replace everything? Sorry for the ignorance but what is p.i.t.a to r&r?
