Father son project update

update we ditched the 68 cab and bought a 70 cab. We have completed the body work and think we are ready to move on.
How do you like the $26 dollar paint job?

Sometimes getting to that point, where you can swap in another part and move on is a big hump to cross.

Big Congrats on the decision.

I did the same. My 67 cab was shot, and I found a 68 cab for $50. It needs work also, but not near as much!

I cringe reading some of these posts when someone gets his grand dads ol truck and is bent on fixing it no matter what the expense.

Replace the rusted out parts, paint it the colors that grandpa had and save the stress.

I was actually only kidding about the brush or roller. Reminds me of aUnibody I bought down in TX back in the '80's. Came out of OK with a black and white (looked like a police car) brush paint job on it. Must have been exterior house paint because it was tough as you know what to get it off.

I plan to do a Rustoleum job on my 70. I've read up alot on these Rustoleum jobs cuz I wanna see for myself what it takes. The vast majority use mineral spirits and many prefer the odorless version. For rolling (with 6-inch fine finish foam rollers and the crevices with foam brushes), thin to about 50 percent. It'll be bubbly but they'll usually go away. You can help the process along by gently blowing them down. Thin about 25 percent if using a spray gun.

Rolling requires multiple light coats in order to achieve adequate coverage, especially if deviating significantly from the base color. However, priming and wet sanding can typically address that. The major issue is drying time so it should really be done indoors. Be ready to cut, buff, and polish the final coat for a decent finish.

beleive it are not straight out of the can into a sprayer and then shoot - will try and go back later with some 800 grit for a final smooth touch

Kinda depends on your sons age. If he is driving age I would concentrate on the basics that make it safe to drive so he can enjoy it while working on it. If he is younger than driving age I would rip it down to the frame and build it from the ground up with plans on having it done when he hits griving age. Let him do the work just verify it is correct. If he knows nothing about engines I highly recommend the visible V8 model. When finished it turns over like a running engine and you can see how everything operates.

Most important of all: Enjoy it!
