poor mpg

checked my mpg today when topping off, 15.2 mpg not sure if thats low or not, most driving is highway under 70 mph, I know that my front axle is locked because the hubs broke so that could take away like 1 mpg right? shouldnt I be getting like 18mpg?

truck has a aftermarket spectre air filter, bought it that way but its the only mod, havent towed anything

fuel bowl has rebuild seal kit I installed and the filter looked clean, I rarely shift over 2200 rpm

maybe I could clean the ebpv tube and sensor, I heard that can increase mpg

I'm going to buy new hubs this weekend when I get paid hopefully with the front axle free it will give me another mpg back, I know the saying "if your worried about gas mileage dont drive a truck" but I would atleast like to achieve 17mpg on the highway going 65 mph empty

My truck had dropped down to 10-11 mpg. I found the IPR was stuck wide open and causing the HPOP to pump over 3000 psi. I took it out and cleaned it and now its back up to 18.

right your doing 80 mph on the highway getting 16.5 mph

I'm doing 62 mph and getting 15mpg so something must be up with my truck

I guarantee if you were going slower your mpg wouldve went up

thanks for the tip, something I can look into

did your truck have any other symptoms besides the poor fuel mpg for the ipr?

Probably would. I don't have the patience I guess. I also have modds n tunes that support mileage gains. Changing or upgrading to the T-500 hpop helped with my mileage, and live tuning with Tony W picked me up another 1 1/2 mpg. Lots of options I guess. Clean oil, filters, ipr, proper tire psi, hanging brakes, tire size, boost leaks,etc.. Just got to weed your way through your truck n see what helps you and your driving styles.

Thats interesting. But I can see how that could cause MPG drops.

Any more info on the fix?

Ahhh I see I see.

well I do have one issue that I think could cause mpg issues

the injector o rings, the truck smokes hard on the first start of the day, rich diesel smell, its not glowplug related either, its strange though sometimes it plumes and sometimes if just puffs, it even did it when it was 80 degrees outside pluming up the neighborhood

as far as I can tell theres no oil in coolant and no diesel in the oil, fuel filter is not black

I had to install a new HPOP. I am wondering if the stuck IPR caused it to run full pressure and cause damage.

Actually, the IPR restricts the bypass to build higher pressure. It would have had to have been stuck "closed".

any thoughts on injector o rings? most threads ive read on injector o rings are explained that the truck smokes on first start of day real bad because the o rings are stiff nd dont seal well when the engine is cold

the previous owner says he replaced the injector o rings but I dont know how true that is

not sure what else this smoke could be from, started the truck this morning about 38 degrees and it smoked pretty bad for a minute before calming down, glow plugs are working the truck fired right up too

He could have cut or rolled one or two when he replaced them. Sure sounds like O'rings.

Watch for oil or diesel flowing back into the cylinder and locking your piston. I use a small shop vac and suck all fluids out of the cylinder. A little messier way is to turn the key over and blow it out. I locked one once. Scares you a little when the engine won't turn over. I have also used a long ratchet on the harmonic balancer and turn it forcing it through the valves.
