IIRC you have to pull the trim panel that surrounds the control, I THINK it is just a snap fit on there, so use a screw driver to pop it out, but open the ash tray and check for any screws that may hold it on. then that should expose 4 screws holding the panel in there. remove them and the whole thing should slide out. But let me check on my work truck and make sure how this is done.
On mine I have never found there to be enough room to work in that area unless the dash is pulled out
Once I take my face panel off there are 4 screws into the face of the controls, but once free I have to push the unit towards the firewall. With the cable and wires and routing behind there that is how I just happen to do it.
Perhaps you can yank the radio guts out and get the controls free and see if you have enough room to inspect it.
Doesn't sound good though. If the cable was routed and lubed right it shouldn't be that hard to turn so perhaps it siezed or the routing of all your cables physically stopped it and you pushed too hard and snapped it. Perhaps be ready to go to a junkyard?
