opened up the cover. Everything looks fine. no metal shavings. besides what ya might see in a diff with 260,000. the pass side has the leak and I think it has a bearing that is bad. The brakes look like new ( besides being covered with oil). There are metal chunks all over the brakes, so it might be the wheel bearing. I need a spndle nut before I can take it apart. I will try to get one tomorrow.
It's not a LS diff as far as I can tell. I can see the little gears on the ends of the axle shafts. No clutch packs. just open. Should I post my VIN?

Weird; the L before the 10 shoulda meant limited slip. At this point, I'd do two things - put a paint mark on the driveshaft, turn a wheel/drum one turn and see how many turns the driveshaft turns (that'll tell you the ratio), and open the door and look at the axle code on the door sticker. C5, D5, F5 would be 4.10 limited slip, and 35, 45, 65 would be 4.10 unlimited (?) slip. If it ends in a 9, it's a 3.55.
So all the bearings looked good. I replace the seals and brakes and fluid. Now just wait to see if it gets worse, but seems better for now thanks again for the help and advice. I still don't think it is a limited slip. When its jacked up, in park, and I spin one wheel the other spins the opposite direction.
It's going to with no weight on it. Turn sharp in stones or new asphalt. And if its posi you will see why I hate mine lol. Or go burn the tires off that will tell you if its posi or not lol
I put an Auburn in my suburban when the 10 bolt went to pieces (and I mean pieces), and I really liked it. It was kinda noisy when I took a sharp turn on pavement.
Where I live a posi is really nice to have for winter driving. I don't mind a little mechanical noise if I know it's not hurting any thing. But ya the clunk clunk clunk caused a little worry right after I finished it and had to travel on a camping trip pulling a boat and a car full of kids. But it held out for years. I sold it and it's probably still good.
Mine never clunked. On new or smooth asphalt the inside tire spins and same with in stones. Its not completely horrible but it's something to think about. Im building mine into a pulling truck so soon (wen its running lol) it will be worth it
