Does anyone have any ideas on upgrading my existing Steering column in my 1987 f250? Want to eliminate swithes on dash to having them all on steering column. I don't want to do alot of fabrication, but will if neccesary. Thanks
It can be done but will take some work. The easy part will be the mechanical fabrication to put a later-year column in. The more difficult part will be interfacing all of the existing vehicle wiring with the new column.
Best bet is to go to the junkyard and get the column, along with as much of the wiring connected to the column as possible - that way, you can maintain all of the electrical connectors on the new column, and splice your existing vehicle wiring into the cut off pigtails going to the new column. Make sure to write down the year/model (and the VIN is the best if available) of the donor rig so you can buy the proper replacement parts for the new column later.
You will need factory wiring diagrams for your rig as well as for the donor vehicle in order to see what wires to connect to what.
I'd guess you could have a couple weekends' worth of solid work in order to do this properly.
You'll prolly have some fitment issues due to the 1992-1996 columns being square, and the 1987-1991 columns being round....Just a thought...
Also, if you DO go on with this....Try to get a column from a 1989-1991 crown victoria...Plug an play everything (Same as a F-150 column in that sense) and it has a chrome mulitfunction switch!
Thats what I did with mine...And I have tilt wheel to boot...
So the 91 crown has everything on the column? I was hoping for a later year, but I figured it would be hard fitting a square peg in a round hole. Thanks guys!
Same column as F-150 (92-96)....Only difference I found was the lower moount had to be swapped out (It ws literall 1/4" difference....Everything was still plug and play though)
