hello gang, i need some info on putting an aftermarket tilt column in my 71. has any of you done this mod. and if so how difficult was it? i havent gone and bought the column yet, i just want to weigh my options. i do plan on converting to power steering and had the idea to do the column at the same time, any suggestions? thanx in advance...
If I understand you correctly you're shooting for power steering and a tilt column. Just something to bear in mind. The power steering column is shorter than the manual steering column by about 3". A power column will move the steering wheel closer to the dash when mated to a manual box. It's just a little glitch to be aware of if you're going to do this a step at a time. You're going to have to measure a power column then compare it to your new tilt to keep everything as close as possible. Aside from the length the only other thing you have to consider is mating it to the steering box. (If you think about it all it really does is twist the box around to keep you pointed in the right direction.) The under dash mounting isn't going to be too much of a problem, there's a flange that's spot welded onto the column that can be moved or you can make up a bracket for temporary use until you get the steering box you want then have it moved on the column an re-welded.
The easiest way to go about this is to use the 78-9 tilt column as it is a direct bolt in from 67-up. You do have to have p/s to use the column and if you have an auto trans, the linkage falls right in place. The only real fun is figuring out the wiring but that's not too bad.
