Re-keying the storage locks

My tailgate lock key for my 11 F350 does not match the ignition key, so I have two keys for my vehicle. What would be awesome is if I could get the interior storage locks re-keyed to match the tailgate key, which would give me a valet-type setup.

I've called two local locksmiths so far, and both claimed they don't do that. Any idea who would? A third locksmith, maybe?

That's strange, I'd be questioning the dealer about that.

My ignition key (1 key) opens everything on my truck; doors, tailgate, underseat storage.

It was a because the tailgate on the new truck is from the old truck... the new truck didn't have the step built into it, so they just swapped tailgates and made me a new key.

Ahh, got it.

Is the old truck still at the dealer that you could switch out the storage locks? Since they let you switch out the gate, I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with that.

Good question, and it would make it easy on me, but then they'd need my key for those. Not even sure if they care about the tailgate lock on the old truck.

They should have swapped the tailgate locks when they swapped the tailgates. If it is not too late, I would go back and complain about that.

But if you want to rekey the interior locks, I don't know why a locksmith could not do that. Makes me wonder if they misunderstood your question. If they were thinking about the PATS system, which is your ignition only, then they misunderstood your question. Or else they are afraid of the disassembly process. Maybe visit a good locksmith instead of the telephone. Otherwise, the dealership bodyshop should be able to easily change those locks for you. This would be your glovebox and console, correct? They could just rekey your tailgate instead, and then you would just have one key. I would hate having two keys, but it sounds like you want that.

Glovebox, console, and the underseat storage bins in the rear.

Not really. The point is, now they have two trucks with mismatched keys. Yours and the one on the lot. If they had swapped out the locks, both trucks would match their original keys.

Assuming they still have that truck on the lot, they could still do that for you. If the truck is gone, now they have two unhappy customers.

One unhappy customer. I dont mind the separate key... I hated that the ignition key controlled all of the locks inside the truck... doesn't lend itself well to storing things and locking them down if the guy parking the truck in the parking garage has a key to all of the boxes. Would be nice to have a seperate key for the console and the rear underseat locks for that reason.

I had to replace the driver door handle & lock on my 99' F-350 after someone stuck a screwdriver in the lock and broke it out. The new lock came with a large assortment of clips (I think they called them cams). You slid them in the order you needed to match your key. I asked the dealer how they matched up all these clip/cams to my key and they said one of their techs would have to just use trial and error to match it up. I figured if that was the method I would save the dealer expense and do it myself. I took out my passanger side door lock to see what the correct clip/cam arrangement for my key and mirrored it for the drivers door. It's all sort of a built a lock in a box set up (at lease was for my 99'). Took about 2 hours to pull the two door handles, get the new lock set up, and reinstall all the parts. Not sure if your new truck will be like that or not. Good luck!
