My starter has been dragging for a while now. Yesterday, it was dragging so bad the cable going to the starter got so hot that it melted the plastic around the terminal on the solenoid where it is attached. Since i really needed to use the truck to haul something, i went to the garage and robbed the solenoid off of my '72 mustang and off i went. When i got back home, i tried to turn off the truck with the key but it wouldn't stop running even with the key removed. I had to pull the ignition circuit on the solenoid to turn it off. I am assuming that the ignition switch went bad. Anyone else ever have this happen?
I replaced the faulty starter this afternoon. I also bought a new solenoid. As i was tightening all the connections, i noticed that the yellow top coil had melted down overnight and the top fell off. Replaced the coil with another good one that i had laying around. Turns out that along with my melted coil, my Pertronix also fried itself overnight. Put the points and condenser back in, and the truck is up and running again.
