I'm sure this is as amateur as it gets, but I don't know - so I'm asking...
I'm going to be replacing the intake manifold on my 85 F250 (460) in the next day or two. In order to do so, I need to pull the distributor. I've never done it before, but I know that I need to do so carefully.
So my question is.... since I'm only pulling it temporarily, and reinstalling the same unit, is it necessary for me to find TDC? Or will I be okay as long as I make marks on the outside of the housing (which will line up with marks I make somewhere on the block/engine) as well as marking the inside of the housing where the rotor is pointing (prior to removal)?
While it is not required, so long as it goes back in the same as it came out, it is better to find TDC just in case you can't remember EXACTLY how it came out.
And TDC is not that hard to find. A few minutes spent to find TDC will save lots of headache later if you put it back in wrong.
