Hot

My battery and starter are both good. This is my second f250 w/400 c6 to do this. When the engine is nice and warm. Not overheating. It doesn't want to start. That is, it acts as if the battery was dead or the starter is crapping out. Why is this happening? Like I said this is my second truck to do this. This is embarrassing. They are good looking and running trucks and they make me feel like they are galopie.

A number of things could be at play here....starter heat soak, poor cable connections and/or corroded cables, timing too far advanced, or a combination of all the above.

Can you be more specific about what the symptoms are?

There can be multiple symptoms of a starter motor going bad, but a dead battery generally implies no power anywhere, not even any interior lights.

The starter is a year or two old. I think the battery is good. I don't really want to buy a new starter. Is heat soak really a problem? The cables look good to me. It starts up fine most of the time. I will start it up, run to the lumber yard. Go to the gas station, then damn it's like I said, it doesn't want to turn over like the battery is dieing. It turns real slow and after I panic for a minute and try and try it will fire up just as it sounds like there is no hope.

Can be if you're running headers....cables can look good but be corroding from the inside out.

Mine used to do this and it was the timing too far advanced.

I was wondering when somebody would mention timing.

The Duraspark ignition module has a feature that retards the timing on start-up, this aids in starting hot engine.

I'm not at all sure aftermarket modules have that feature, though.

In any event, investigating the timing as a cause is certainly worth the time.

10 bucks says it's your cables. Replace them with 2ga from the battery to the solinoid and the solinoid to
the starter.

mine just started doing the exact same thing with a 400 and headers. the timing was way off when i bought the truck and the distributor was stuck. i had a guy i know get as brutal as he wanted to get it out as i had an extra one so he demolished it but got it out. i think the culprit for me is to far advanced. in theory the next time this happens i am going to pull the coil wire and it shouldn't do it. but then again this is just a theory.

X2 ....

Mine was doing exactly like yours. Hard to crank when hot.

2awg cables everywhere made the problem go away.

don't forget the ground, 2awg there as well.

yea my 390 used to do that when it was hot (running temp), the battery was weak. changed the battery and it took the problem away. but still could be any of the other problems as listed above. good luck. check your timing first if you have a gun cause that's too easy to not do first.
