Off to the dealer again, just replaced batteries, egr valve and egr cooler. Truck has little power when cold and blows blue smoke. Once it is warm runs terrible unless the rpm is 2000. I have been using the tow/haul mode just to get around town. Oh yeah once its warm puffs a little black smoke when rpms drop and is slow to get back up to 2000 rpm. Have read a lotr of threads and am unsure if it is an injector problem or turbo leak! 2005 king ranch with 150000 miles. Any help would be appreciated!
Just got mine back, Im a few threads down from you, had a bad seal on the turbo and a leak somewhere on the intake side of the system.
I would laso test the FICM as stated above, and FYI when my egr/oil coolers were replaced my truck smoked for a while after the repair just due to the amount of oil/coolant that was pumped into the exhaust.
I did not have a rough running issue when this occured so I would be more apt to say you have a FICM problem. Did they replace or rebuild the oil cooler when they did the egr cooler. If not they need to look at that as the root cause of failure of an egr cooler is a plugged oil cooler.
Thanks Matty 169 and Sarge 261! First of all I will look up the test for the FICM, and also will inquire whether the oil cooler was inspected or repaired. I will still take it in to the dealer in Ottawa to check codes as I am not much of a diesel mechanic!
The best money you can spend is on a Scan Guage II. They sell for around 200 bucks here in the states, but you can keep an eye on the EOT and ECT spread which will tell you if the oil cooler is plugged up. I think it may monitor FICM voltage too...not 100% sure though.
You want to see 48.xx volts to keep the FICM healthy.
If they didnt replace or rebuild the oil cooler chances are thats the issue and it plugged your egr cooler again.
I would definately research that Scan Guage...cheap insurance.
