Coming back to this thread to see if I can resolve this pinging issue. I just bought a scanguage II and hooked it up to the truck and I'm hoping that I can use it to help discover why she pings so much.
After paying attention to it some more, I've come to believe that the truck pings pretty much all the time. When the revs increase it almost seems like it just pings quicker and gets drowned out by the sound of the engine. Today I was coming back home with the truck loaded to the roof of the canopy with maple firewood and floored it climbing a big grade on the freeway. It kicked down to 3rd then 2nd and the rpms jumped over 3000 and the pinging was so loud I backed off the throttle. That can't be good.
I picked up one new motorcraft 02 and am waiting on the other (delayed shipping) then I'll replace them. Think I'll change the fuel filter as well since I haven't yet and someone mentioned it could help. Cleaned the MAF about a month or so ago.
Any thoughts on whether the scanguage can help me sort this out?
Just bumped into this thread looking for one that I read last week, thought I subsrcibed to, but not found it again just yet. Anyhoo, the thread discussion mentioned about disconnecting the battery for a while and reset computer.
I did this as I had constant pinging in my long trips and especially when climbing the mountains and/or towing the boat.
Now, after leaving battery disconnected for approx. 30 min. and reconnecting, I have no ping!
Seems that maybe over time, the fuel changes are enough that the computer needs to relearn and re-adjust...dunno, but it worked for me without throwing any parts into it.
BC, any results in your efforts to find the source? My battery drain and reset worked for a while, but about a month ago, pinging returned. Thinking it might be due to winter fuel mix we are now using I disconnected battery again and tried to reset, but still pings at times on a trip, and more so when towing a load of approx. 10K. Usually is pinging when holding gear before it needs to drop a gear and rev up to keep speed. If I floor it with a load, it is bad like you mentioned earlier.
Mine pinged also......changed the original MAF sensor and ran Seaform thru the motor. Pinging quit. Run 89 octane pulling my 5th wheel with a %Star tune.
