About to pull the trigger (advice please)
Highlights: Diesel, 4x4 short bed, 20" OWL polished wheels. No roof, no nav. My price, is a hair over 50. Now that I've had a chance to drive it some, I must say I like the vehicle but it leaves me wanting:
There are no running boards, which seems odd to me. I guess some get shipped that way. The killer for me is no GDO (Homelink); it's also missing clearence lamps. If I'm going to spend this kind of money, what's a few thousand more (or so I think).
I kind of looked over the option groups available while I was at the dealership and I was left confused. They also were a little coy about my question 'so what options' am I missing on this truck?'.
My plan is to return this truck Monday and ask: 'can you locate me a .....'. My question to you all is what do I fill in the blank with?
I can tell you what I don't need: snow plow package, moon roof (I've had one for as long as I care to remember and never user it), fifth wheel prep (I don't have a 5th wheel), Camper pkg, heavy service, Trans PTO.
So as I said in a previous thread, can you help a brother out?
For homelink, you can find them on eBay for about $100. It's just the little module with a power wire going to it. I would grab a setup off eBay. I've had it for 3yrs on my Expy and never used it...I think I might have programmed it once upon a time.
$50k is alot of money. Who's kidding, that is a butt-ton of money. Especially if it doesn't have the stuff you want. You can always add stuff later, but it'll cost more if you stick with OEM parts. Brand new pricing gets better package discounts.
Post the VIN # up for us. I'm interested in seeing the build sheet for that truck. For fun, why don't you build a 2011 Lariat on Ford.com and see what options it has vs. what they offer you. Probably the best way to see what it does/doesn't have right now.
That said, a couple of things come to mind. First of all, you can negotiate with them to add the running boards for you. Secondly, the visor with the garage door opener is somewhere around ~$200 and can be installed easily. Lastly, if the roof clearance lights are a deal breaker you've got two choices......you can add them yourself which is what some of the guys on here have done, or you can wait and have them find a truck with them already on it.
If it was mine and the clearance lights were a deal breaker, I'd wait and have them locate a truck for me simply because I don't have enough confidence in my skills to install them myself without screwing something up. Plus they're under warranty when installed from the factory.
Aside from that, the options and combinations are seemingly endless. Go to this site:ProFleetSales.com - Professional Fleet Sales of Ford Cars, SUVs and Trucks! and go to the top of the page where it says "Download Center" and you can get a copy of the order guide. Also go here:100% Haggle-Free New Car Price Quotes from Local Dealers - TrueCar and you can build and price a truck and get dealer cost and MSRP. As for the price of the options that truck is missing, the running boards (the optional ones not in the chrome package) are about a $495 option, the GDO is $125, and the clearance lights are around $55. So you're only looking at about $675 difference in cost on another truck that already has all of them. The thing is that while they may find you a truck with those option on it, it may also have some that you don't want.
Your other option is to order a truck the way you want it.

I couldn't really care about the clearence lights, but I had them on my old 250 and liked how they looked.
The one thing I'm pretty certain of if the color LCD screen; not that I could give two hoots about Navigation, but rather all the other cool stuff you can do with it.
So what do I want? I hate to say it, but "everything else but those things I don't". That's the only way I know how to answer because of my ignorance.
Now then, I may actually have a good idea of what *can* go into one of these having seen many option sheets; however, what I think I'm asking moreso, based on the vast wealth of experience here, is someone saying: "If you find one with the 'ultimate' package that includes everything else" or "have you considered that if you get X you should also get Y.
For example, I have no intention of plowing snow; however, I didn't realize that this package includes what I perceive to be something like the LLS on my Navigator.
I can tell you one thing: I'm not buying it for towing as I have nothing other than a small utility trailer.
Oh, and one thing I'd really like to have on the truck is a trouble free transmission

Now this is what is on the truck you're looking at. There are a lot of other options available. The above information is from the link to the order guide I provided above. While it is the 2012 Order Guide, there are very few changes from the 2011 to the 2012 models. The 2012 is supposed to have four-way adjustable headrests and auto up/down front windows. You'll need to look at the options to see if there's anything else available that you want or need on the truck.
With regard to the LCD screens, the one on the Nav unit controls the radio and navigation functions. The one on the dash in the instrument panel is standard on the Lariat and has the functions for all of the truck apps like the "miles to empty", and numerous other functions. If that's what you're referring to, you don't need the Nav system to access those features.
In essence, the Snow Plow Package only gets you the upgraded springs and the extra heavy-duty alternator. The Lariat Ultimate Package gets you a few things in addition to the Lariat Interior Package: Moonroof, Nav system, and the tailgate step.....that's it.
If you're interested in the Chrome Package, it gets you some chrome goodies that total $995. The FX-4 Off Road Package gets you Hill Descent Control, an FX-4 decal on the bedside, skid plates, and Rancho Branded shocks. The Camper Package gets you upgraded front springs, a rear stabilizer bar, a slide-in camper certification, and rear auxiliary springs.
There are a few other things that aren't packaged such as the engine block heater, the Rapid Heat Supplemental Heater, bed extender, tailgate step, bodyside molding, upfitter switches, universal garage door opener, rubber floor mats, and a few others.
You're just really going to have to look over this truck very well to see if you'll be pleased with it in the long run. There are so many combinations available on these trucks, it can get really confusing. I knew what I definitely wanted when I was looking for mine and found it without having to order one. I didn't necessarily want the Chrome Package on it but this one had it and the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Other than that, it is equipped exactly as I would have ordered it.
so if you like the rest of the truck, don't let that kill the deal. You'd need the Nav HU, the GPS module and then basically plug it in. It's almost that simple. Maybe need to get the HU programmed. It's worth asking the Dealership to add to the truck
The Dealer can order the Homelink visor as well for you. 1 simple keyed 12v hot wire and it's working
I think if you are happy with the truck as is, see what they'll do to make you happier. Your list of must haves isn't hard to meet at all.
have you looked at a used 2010 by chance? a nice low mileage should still have upwards of 2yr on bumper to bumper warranty, and of course the 5yr/100k motor warranty. it'd be a ton cheaper
As far as getting used (Tylus), that's where I started, but didn't seem to find one. (I mean I don't know how much you're thinking I'd save, but if it wasn't 10G I probably wouldn't take it).
It will be an interesting morning as this dealer's owner is my neighbor and when I tell them I'll be passing, I wonder what they'll try to do to make the sale happen.
Very nice. She's got everything on your wish list. Dang I'm so jealous of youse louts.
Edit: now that you got the GDO, I hope she fits in your garage.
