If you have coolant loss, puking or white smoke and suspect the egr cooler has failed I would not drive it at all. You are risking blowing the head gaskets.
If you dont already have blown gaskets you probably will sooner or later.. I would take the heads off and have them checked and reinstall with arp's and new ford gaskets.. i learned the hard way.. after my second egr cooler popped in 56k the head gaskets starting leaking within a year after i had deleted the egr cooler so i then had to pay to get them replaced.. do it all at one time and get it over with..there are also a few other things to check/replace while you are in there.. the techs on here can tell you better than I can about those.. just my 2 cents
I have only ever seen ONE truck that needed to have both coolers replaced twice, but it was an E-Series that the owners were very guilty of using for very short distance drives and frequent engine shutdowns or extended engine idling, resulting in a VERY badly carbon clogged up second EGR cooler.
Just my .00002 from the outside looking in. If I didn't know anything about my truck and it failed so I took it to the dealer and they charged my 2K to fix then 20K miles later the same problem happened... I may not take it to the same place to get it fixed. I'm not trying to disprove either of you its just my thinking

Well you won't ever see mine but you might hear of it being number two because all my trips are short. I don't turn the truck on and off frequently or idle extensively so maybe that will save me
I also put 3 in one truck with in 1000 miles... that was my fault I followed the stupid pinpoint test for p012f. I contacted tech support was advised to repalce it each time. lessons we learn about how stuff works. needless to say p012f is not exactly as it seems to be 100% of the time.
