So I want to do a ZF5 swap into my 95 psd. I have heard a lot about the 5 speed and I have been told that they aren't that great. What are the common problems with these tranny's and how can I fix them before they go wrong. Also, what does doing the swap require? Is my transfer case fine where it is, is everything just going to bolt right up? Thanks in advance!
This is a good place to start reading up. Start on page one. Please note that while it's taking me forever to do it, my results are not typical. I'll let you know what I think about the ZF 5 speed after I'm driving it.
The only "common problems" with the tranny aren't really with the tranny. The clutch hydraulics are wimpy, and there's a cr@ppy plastic bushing on the master cylinder pushrod that fails. And from the factory, they shipped with a dual-mass flywheel that, if it fails catastrophically, can grenade the tranny case. But with a transplant, you can of course avoid both these issues. Otherwise, the tranny itself is pretty bulletproof.

I don't think a tranny with a reputation for a weak input shaft can be considered "bulletproof"... and the way this one is built, I'm not willing to excuse any part of the shifting mechanism. IMO (assuming we are talking about the M5OD), this is a POS. putting the ZF in is a good fix; but i'm wondering whether putting the factory auto in might not be an easier swap, especially with a floor shifter. what has to be done about the computer and wiring harness to make that work?
I haven't read of the weak input shaft issues here or on the other sites, but then, they might be posted more on the performance/aftermarket threads. So if the OP anticipates any "spirited" driving, more research would def. be in order. And ZF didn't make the clutch hydraulics or the flywheel.

Nothing HAS to be done about the computer but it runs a little better if you get it re-flashed. I drove mine for several months with auto programming and a manual trans with no issue. As far as the harness, depending on the year the harness comes from and what year truck it is going into, you may have to move some wires around within the harness. No big deal though, fairly easy once you figure out which spots to move them to. The only thing the harness applies to on the ZF is reverse lights, 4x4 lights, and cranking with the key.
the OP mentioned the 5 SPD; I was mentioning it to make clear which one I was talking about - it occurred to me after i brought it up that i did not know for sure it was the one he was talking about.

we're mixing tranny's up - when the OP mentioned a ford six with a 5 speed in an F150, i fixated on the mazda trans (which is what's in my F150), so that's what i was talking about, not the ZF, as i tried to make clear.
I found the references to the weak input shaft in several places when i starting trying to find out what was going on with my trans. apparently the mazda trans has a rep for that problem, among others.
ADMINISTRATOR - might be best to delete all posts referring to the M5OD, it seems to be confusing.
