Question E4OD swap

One of the Ford vans I service for the local food coop needs a trans replacement. It is a '94 E250 Super with a 4.9L 6 cylinder engine. I suspect that the used units available are attached to 8 cylinder engines. The question is whether they are interchangeable with the 6 cylinder model. Does anyone know if the bell housing and other connection points are the same?

I know from a previous engine&trans swap from a 94 F150 into a 95 E350 that there are differences in those models. Even though it was the same engine, there were different exhaust manifolds and emissions plumbing, and the electrical connector on the trans had a different shape socket even though it had the same pins. So I don't trust the junkyard interchange database.

Thanx

See if this helps you:

List of Ford bellhousing patterns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I believe the 6-banger shares the same bell housing pattern with the Windsor series of V8 engines but check to make sure.

Thumbs up

Thanx for the link. According to the web page the 4.9L I6 uses the same pattern as the 5.0L and 5.8L V8, the "Ford small-block V8 pattern."

Yup, the 300, 302, and 351w can interchange transmissions.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to specify the 351W? The 351C and 351M are entirely different....

Yeah, I was referring to the small block family.

The trans is up graded in 95, so that is the trans that you want. That is why you found the different connector. You can buy a harness up grade for the 95 trans.

Just picking nits again; sorry. The 351C shares the bellhousing pattern and motor mounts with the small blocks...it's the 351M that's the odd duck out (hence the Modified moniker).

So to be technical...if the OP finds an E4OD behind a Cleveland, it'll bolt onto the 300! All bets are off as to whether the converter would bolt up...

Yeah, you're right. I get so used to referring to the C & M & W as different engines that I forget things like that.

Trans Swap

K.... Since were on 300 I6 trans swaps... Our 95 E150 has the stock 3 speed and winds the rpm's to no end on the e-way at 70. Can we swap in a E4OD or AOD 4 speed trans to help address that issue and if so, will we also have to swap out the ECM or re-program to reconize the 4 speed trans?
